About Conner Gorry
Hola amigos, colleagues, and future collaborators!
Conner Gorry here, writing to you from Havana, the western hemisphere's swinging-est hot spot and the city I've called home for almost 20 years. I'm a professional journalist and freelance writer dedicated to sharing in-depth, well-researched, and accurate information about Cuba - especially the changes happening on the island, the achievements and challenges of the health system, and unique stories which otherwise wouldn't see column or screen space.
I first came to Cuba in 1993 and moved here permanently in 2002. After writing close to 20 guidebooks for Lonely Planet and publishing my master's thesis on the US embargo of the island, I made the leap and have since made my home in Havana where I am officially accredited by the International Press Center. For over a decade, I've covered the Cuban health system for MEDICC Review, filed stories for The Guardian, the New York Daily News, The Lancet, the Irish Times, the BBC, and more. In 2009, I launched my blog, Here is Havana, one of the first and most popular blogs about ex-pat life in Cuba.
My most recent books include: Cuban Harleys, Mi Amor, Havana Street Style, and A Contemporary Cuba Reader. I've contributed to many anthologies including The Caribbean Writer, The Best Travel Writing, and The Best Women's Travel Writing. In 2016, her book, The World According to Conner was published.
Last but not least, in 2013, I founded and opened Cuba's only English-language bookstore and coffeehouse, Cuba Libro, in Havana's Vedado neighborhood. An ethically- and socially-responsible business, Cuba Libro is leading the charge in how private businesses can do both well and good in the new emerging economy.
